This little project started as a response to American sound curator Jessica Catron's 'Insect Ensemble', performed at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in 2011... but was really just a thinly veiled excuse to drink beer, play around with soldering irons and circuits!
Tiny 'noisemakers' made out of hacked circuitry, responded to changes in light and sound in the large concrete cavern, otherwise known as UTS Building 10 courtyard. Their playful interactivity, their concealment, and their exposed circuitry attempted to blur the line between what is man-made and what is 'nature'... and if it didn't totally succeed, then at least the kids seemed to like it!
The final result was part of the Installation Walk and Open Studio held at UTS on 24 May 2012. The video doesn't really do it justice but should give an idea of what we're on about.
